Bitter Sweet

A mysterious thing,
It landed on my doorstep.
At first glance t’was beautiful,
Its shining gold,
Captivating every eye.

But it was like a poisoned apple,
Beautiful on the outside,
But fatal in the depths.
It was a deceiver of truth, an enemy.

I knew of this danger,
For I was warned of its fate,
But it was too late,
For I had been lured by its divine evil,
Its beautiful pleasure,
And now a burden was mine to carry.

Its heavy weight drug me down,
And I thought I’d soon perish,
For its power was so strong,
Only by the strongest effort,
Could I go on.

Everyday my eyes grew dim,
No longer could I remember
The things once pure and good,
For another view so terrifying,
Tormented my tired eyes.

No more could I remember the fragrance of life,
No more could I taste sweetness on my lips.
All that was left was the stench of death,
My lips were parched, my mouth dry.

I knew the pain I had to bear,
The price I had to pay,
I knew the penalty that was mine,
The death that awaited me.

But then suddenly,
When the eye that saw all,
No longer gazed on my black heart,
And the weight on my shoulders,
No longer pressed down,
Someone else caught the focus
Of the all-seeing eye,
Another had drawn the righteous wrath away from me,
And took it upon himself.

But this other had done no wrong,
He had not been deceived,
Nor lured by evil.
His body had no mark of wickedness.

My eyes filled with tears,
In awe I stood.
For he had taken my blame,
And made me clean,
For he had released the burden.
And paid the price,
For he had died the death for me.

"...Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

~John 3:21

All is about God's glory, not about how good we are, or how much we can do, but about how great our King is.
